Ayo Dosunmu is entering unrestricted free agency at the right time, and league insiders expect the guard to become one of the most sought-after role players on the market this offseason.
NBA insider Evan Sidery reported Saturday that multiple contending teams are expected to pursue Dosunmu in free agency. Sidery added that the Minnesota Timberwolves could explore a sign-and-trade scenario if salary cap restrictions prevent the organization from re-signing him to a team-friendly contract.
Dosunmu, 26, completed the final season of his three-year, $21 million contract after splitting the 2025-26 campaign between the Chicago Bulls and Minnesota. The combo guard produced the best numbers of his career, averaging 14.8 points, 3.6 assists and 3.4 rebounds while shooting 51.7% from the field and 43.9% from three-point range across 69 games.
His efficiency and defensive versatility significantly raised his value around the league. Dosunmu also finished ninth in Sixth Man of the Year voting after thriving in a secondary role that allowed him to attack closeouts, defend multiple perimeter positions and play both on and off the ball.
Minnesota’s postseason run further strengthened his market. Through 10 playoff games with the Timberwolves, Dosunmu averaged 15.6 points and 4.1 assists while shooting 50% from the field and 42.5% from deep.
The Timberwolves face a difficult financial situation entering the offseason. Minnesota already carries a roster built around expensive core pieces, and second-apron limitations could complicate efforts to retain role players on larger contracts.
If the franchise decides Dosunmu’s market value exceeds its comfort range, a sign-and-trade could become the most practical outcome. That route would allow Minnesota to recover draft compensation or rotational depth instead of losing him outright in free agency.
Dosunmu’s improvement as a shooter has become especially important. After entering the league as a defense-first guard, he elevated his three-point percentage to 40.3% in 2023-24 and followed it with a career-best 43.9% mark this season.
