Former Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has ended discussions over taking charge of the Netherlands, as he wants to remain in club football instead.
The Dutchman was dismissed in May, a year after winning the Premier League title, following a disappointing campaign that ended in a fifth-place finish.
Slot was approached to succeed Ronald Koeman, who stepped down after the Netherlands were knocked out of the World Cup at the last-32 stage by Morocco, but talks did not progress past early contacts.
“At this stage in my career, I prefer to see myself on the training pitch with my players every day, something that is simply not possible in the same way with a national team,” he told Voetbal International.
“And (it is) why I chose not to continue the talks and not to start negotiations on what a possible contract might look like.
“I have enormous respect for the national team and for the KNVB (Dutch Football Association) and can only be positive about the professional manner in which the talks proceeded that week. For now, I believe club football still has a lot to offer me.”
Meanwhile, former Portugal, Belgium and Everton manager Roberto Martinez has been linked with the vacant Netherlands role.
Martinez has managed at the last three World Cups, leading Belgium to the semi-finals in 2018 before they were knocked out by eventual champions France.
Belgium did not fare as well four years later with Martinez as the helm as they exited the 2022 tournament after the group stages.
Martinez subsequently took charge of Portugal, leading Cristiano Ronaldo and Co to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.
He was on the touchline for Portugal’s 2026 World Cup campaign as the team bowed out in the round of 16 following a narrow 1-0 defeat by Spain. Arsenal’s Mikel Merino scored a late winner to leave Ronaldo in tears at the end of what many expect to be his final World Cup.
Martinez received some criticism during the tournament for his reluctance to substitute Ronaldo, who scored three goals in five appearances, including a brace against Uzbekistan in a 5-0 win.
