Denver Nuggets newcomer Alpha Diallo believes the defensive skills that helped him become the EuroLeague’s Best Defender can also make him effective against NBA opponents.
The 29-year-old forward arrives in Denver after spending five seasons with AS Monaco, where he established himself as one of Europe’s leading perimeter defenders.
Diallo’s defensive abilities are expected to be an important part of his attempt to earn playing time under Nuggets head coach David Adelman.
Although the NBA presents a different level of competition, Diallo believes the fundamentals of effective defense remain largely unchanged.
“You have to put pressure on the ball, move your feet, stay between your opponent and the basket, and contest shots,” he explained.
His ability to defend different positions was one of his main strengths during his time with Monaco, and he hopes to provide similar versatility for Denver.
Diallo understands that many NBA players may not be familiar with his career in Europe, but he sees that as an opportunity to make an impression.

The former Monaco standout is entering the NBA at an unusual stage of his career, making his debut at 29 rather than arriving directly from college or through the draft as a younger player.
However, his extensive European experience could help him adjust to the demands of competing against established NBA players.
