A Michael Jordan game-worn jersey from the 1998 NBA Finals has sold for $14 million, setting a new record for the most expensive basketball memorabilia item ever purchased.
The private transaction, handled by Hunt Auctions on Monday, also made the autographed Chicago Bulls uniform the second-most expensive sports jersey ever sold.
Miami real estate investor Ron Firman purchased the historic jersey, which Jordan wore during Game 2 of the 1998 NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz.
“Michael Jordan was an incredibly talented player who is admired around the world,” Firman said. “I’m very excited about the purchase.”
Jordan scored 37 points in that June 5, 1998, contest, helping Chicago even the championship series at 1-1.
The Bulls eventually defeated Utah in six games, capturing their sixth NBA championship in eight seasons. Jordan also earned his sixth Finals MVP award.
The jersey has changed ownership only once since the Bulls organization originally sold it in 2003, adding to its historical significance.
