The Miami Heat have claimed guard Bez Mbeng off waivers, adding him to their training-camp roster ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Ira Winderman reported Tuesday that Miami successfully claimed Mbeng after he was waived by the Charlotte Hornets on Sunday. The move brings the Heat’s training-camp roster to 19 players, two below the NBA’s offseason maximum.
Mbeng is familiar with the organization after spending the 2025-26 season with Miami’s G League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce.
The guard appeared in 41 games for Sioux Falls, averaging 6.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 27.4 minutes per game. He shot 49.0% from the field, although his three-point percentage was 26.7%.
Mbeng also spent part of last season in the NBA with the Utah Jazz. He played 15 games and averaged 8.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 4.1 assists in 32.9 minutes per game while shooting 50.0% from the field.
His NBA stint also included 2.3 steals per game, although he shot 19.4% from three-point range.
Before turning professional, Mbeng developed at Yale, where his production increased significantly over four seasons. He averaged 4.8 points as a freshman in 2021-22 before posting 10.6 points and 3.1 assists in his sophomore season.
Mbeng then averaged 11.2 points and 4.0 assists in 2023-24 before putting together his most productive college campaign in 2024-25. He averaged 13.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.7 assists in 28 games while shooting 37.9% from three-point range.
The Heat are entering training camp with a dramatically different roster after their offseason acquisition of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis from the Milwaukee Bucks.
Miami traded Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis and multiple draft assets in the blockbuster deal. The Heat also added Klay Thompson, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Nick Richards while retaining Andrew Wiggins.
Their projected starting lineup features Davion Mitchell, Thompson, Wiggins, Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, leaving competition for the remaining roster spots heading into camp.
