The Dallas Mavericks have added Willie Green and Garrett Temple to head coach Dusty May’s coaching staff ahead of the 2026-27 season, with the organization announcing a seven-man group of assistant coaches on Wednesday.
Green will serve as Dallas’ lead assistant after most recently spending four seasons as head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans from 2021-25. During his tenure, New Orleans made two playoff appearances and won 49 games in 2023-24, tying the second-highest win total in franchise history.
Before entering coaching, Green played 12 NBA seasons from 2003-15. He began his coaching career with the Golden State Warriors in 2016 and was part of their championship-winning staffs in 2017 and 2018.
Green then joined the Phoenix Suns in 2019 and helped the organization post a 51-21 record in 2020-21, its first winning season in a decade, while reaching the NBA Finals for the first time in 27 years.
Temple joins Dallas after a 16-year NBA playing career that included stops with 13 teams. He spent the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons with the Pelicans under Green, helping New Orleans reach the playoffs for the first time since 2018.
The Baton Rouge native played four seasons at LSU and finished his college career as the school’s all-time leader in minutes played with 4,432. Temple went undrafted in 2009 before building a lengthy NBA career.
Dallas also hired Joe Boylan, Drew Williamson, Mody Maor, Rob Fodor and Sam Hershberger as assistant coaches. Williamson brings direct experience working with May, having spent the last two seasons on his staff at Michigan.
Williamson helped the Wolverines win the 2026 NCAA championship while posting a 37-3 record, the winningest season in Michigan men’s basketball history. He previously worked under May at Florida Atlantic from 2021-24, including during the program’s historic 2022-23 Final Four run.
Maor arrives after two seasons as head coach of Japan’s Nagasaki Velca, leading the six-year-old franchise to its first B.League championship after a league-best 43-13 regular-season record. Fodor joins as an assistant and shooting coach following two decades with the Miami Heat, where he spent the last 10 years as a shooting and player development coach.
Hershberger previously worked with the Cleveland Charge and Cavaliers and also has a history with May, having served on Florida’s coaching staff from 2017-19.
Nate Mitchell will hold a dual role as an assistant coach with Dallas and head coach of the Texas Legends. Tyson Chandler and Quincy Acy will return as player development coaches.
The expanded staff comes as Dallas reshapes its basketball operation around Cooper Flagg after a 26-56 season and a rebuild-focused offseason. The Mavericks have added young talent including Zaccharie Risacher, Santi Aldama and first-round picks Morez Johnson Jr. and Sergio de Larrea, with May entering his first season leading the team.
