The Sacramento Kings are adding Brendan Suhr and Jason Maxiell to Doug Christie’s coaching staff, league sources told Michael Scotto of HoopsHype on Monday.
Suhr brings more than 25 years of experience as an NBA coach and executive, along with 15 seasons of college coaching experience. Maxiell joins the Kings after working as an assistant coach for the Stockton Kings, Sacramento’s G League affiliate.
Suhr has a long coaching background that includes NBA and college basketball. His experience adds another veteran voice to a Sacramento staff that already includes associate head coach Mike Woodson, Leandro Barbosa, Bobby Jackson, Mike Miller and Chris Darnell.
Maxiell moves from Stockton to Sacramento after beginning his coaching career following a 10-year NBA playing career. The former forward was selected 26th overall by the Detroit Pistons in the 2005 NBA Draft and played 618 regular-season games in the league.
Maxiell spent his first eight NBA seasons with Detroit, appearing in 485 games for the franchise. He later played for the Orlando Magic and Charlotte Bobcats before continuing his career overseas.
The 6-foot-7 Maxiell averaged 5.6 points and 4.0 rebounds per game during his NBA career. His best statistical season came in 2008-09, when he averaged 8.8 points and 5.3 rebounds in 78 games for Detroit.
The coaching additions come as Sacramento enters a significant transition under Christie. The Kings finished 22-60 in 2025-26 and are shifting toward a younger roster after moving on from several veterans during the offseason.
Sacramento selected Darius Acuff Jr. seventh overall in the 2026 NBA Draft and also acquired Alex Karaban. Emanuel Sharp was added in the second round, giving the Kings three young prospects from the draft.
The Kings also signed Ben Simmons to a one-year veteran minimum contract and retained Precious Achiuwa and Daeqwon Plowden. Jonathan Mogbo and Adam Flagler remain on two-way contracts.
At the same time, Sacramento waived DeMar DeRozan, while Russell Westbrook, Drew Eubanks, Doug McDermott and Killian Hayes departed in free agency. Devin Carter was traded to Atlanta for the draft rights to Alpha Kaba.
The Kings still have veteran talent on the roster, including Domantas Sabonis, Zach LaVine, Malik Monk and De’Andre Hunter.
