Jalen Duren could be heading toward a major decision in his contract negotiations with the Detroit Pistons, with the two sides still unable to agree on a long-term deal.
According to a source familiar with the situation, Duren is becoming more willing to accept Detroit’s $9.6 million qualifying offer and play out the upcoming season.
If no agreement is reached by the end of September, that path would allow him to reach unrestricted free agency next summer.
The contract dispute has become one of the NBA’s most notable remaining restricted free agency situations. Detroit and Duren are reportedly separated by more than $5 million annually in their negotiations.
After earning All-Star and All-NBA recognition last season, Duren is looking for a substantial five-year contract that reflects his increased value.
However, his negotiating position is complicated by the lack of teams with enough available salary cap space to present a competitive offer.
As a result, Duren’s primary source of leverage is his ability to accept the qualifying offer and potentially enter the open market without restrictions in 2027.
Sacramento expressed interest in the big man earlier in free agency and could become a possible destination if he reaches unrestricted free agency.
Taking that route would come with significant financial risk.
Duren would earn approximately $25 million less next season than he could under a new long-term agreement, while also assuming the risks associated with playing a full season without longer-term security.
For that reason, there is still skepticism over whether Duren would actually follow through with the qualifying-offer strategy.
For now, however, the possibility remains on the table as the September deadline approaches.
