Luka Doncic arrived in Los Angeles expecting to join one of the NBA’s most stable and successful franchises, but his time with the Lakers has already included significant change.
The Lakers have gone through two ownership transitions in just 14 months. The Buss family agreed to sell control to Mark Walter in June 2025, and Walter has now agreed to sell the franchise to Bob Iger and Josh Kushner.
For Doncic, it adds another major change after his unexpected trade from Dallas 18 months ago.
The superstar recently signed a three-year, $165 million maximum extension with a player option for 2028-29, meaning he could potentially become a free agent after the 2027-28 season.
Doncic acknowledged the changes while reacting positively to the latest sale.
“Being a Laker means everything to me, and I’m excited to get back on the court and bring a championship to LA,” he wrote. “I’ve gotten used to big changes over these last few years, but I know that no matter what, there is no limit to the potential of this iconic franchise. I look forward to meeting Josh and Bob so we can get to work building something special in LA together.”
Questions remain about what Iger and Kushner will change. It is unclear whether the new owners will restructure the front office or alter the direction established under Walter, which included a greater emphasis on data and analytics.
With LeBron James gone in free agency, Doncic is now clearly the centerpiece of the Lakers. His main priority will be seeing whether the new ownership can build a championship contender around him.
