The Cleveland Cavaliers continue to pursue free agent Jonathan Kuminga after falling short in their attempt to land LeBron James.
According to reports, Cleveland has maintained discussions with Kuminga and his representatives throughout the free agency period, with interest existing on both sides.
The 23-year-old became available after the Atlanta Hawks declined their $24.3 million team option.
He averaged 12.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and shot 33 percent from three-point range in 36 games split between Atlanta and the Golden State Warriors last season.
Agent Aaron Turner said Kuminga would welcome the opportunity to play in Cleveland.
“Jonathan likes the Cavs, likes (coach) Kenny Atkinson, and (star) Donovan Mitchell likes him,” said Turner, noting that Kuminga trained in Cleveland for two months last summer.
Kuminga is also familiar with Atkinson from their time together with the Warriors, where Atkinson served as an assistant coach.
The financial side of a deal remains difficult. Cleveland could offer around $6 million in cap space or potentially use a larger salary cap exception worth roughly $15 million.
However, that would affect the team’s ability to complete a new contract with veteran James Harden, whose negotiations remain on hold while the Cavaliers evaluate their roster.
Kuminga reportedly prefers a sign-and-trade with Atlanta, allowing him to earn closer to the $20-23 million salary he would have received if the Hawks had exercised his option.
