LeBron James’ decision to join the Philadelphia 76ers could significantly complicate the New York Knicks’ bid to defend their NBA title.
Philadelphia abandoned its long-term rebuilding model in favor of building a win-now roster, and that strategy reached its peak when James agreed to a reported two-year, $8 million contract with a player option.
The Los Angeles Lakers star joins Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Maxey and V.J. Edgecombe, giving the 76ers one of the NBA’s most talented lineups.
James said his decision was driven by the pursuit of another championship.
“I’m not going for money,” James wrote on X. “I’m not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point? I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship.
“I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time.”
Philadelphia will look much different from the team the Knicks swept in the second round of the 2026 playoffs, while New York returns nearly its entire championship core.
The biggest questions for the 76ers are whether Embiid can stay healthy, whether James can maintain his elite play at 41, and how quickly the team’s star-studded lineup develops chemistry.
