Michael Porter Jr.’s future with the Brooklyn Nets could depend on whether the two sides can reach an agreement on a contract extension, with Chris Haynes reporting that the forward could eventually seek a departure if an extension is not considered.

“If it becomes apparent early on that an extension is not in play, then I do believe the next step will be the Brooklyn Nets and Michael Porter Jr. potentially parting ways,” Haynes said.

Nets general manager Sean Marks has publicly expressed interest in keeping Porter in Brooklyn, but indicated the team is not rushing into a decision. Porter has one season remaining on his contract and is scheduled to earn $40.8 million in 2026-27.

“We’ll have those discussions. We’ve got time. There’s no immediate hurry right now. We value him a lot. He had a terrific year,” Marks said. “I love Mike, the guy, the person, the player, and I hope he is part of this team.”

Porter arrived in Brooklyn before the 2025-26 season and immediately became the team’s top offensive option. The 28-year-old averaged 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 52 games, shooting 46.3% from the field, 36.3% from three-point range and 85.9% from the free-throw line.

His shooting remained a major part of Brooklyn’s offense during a difficult season. Porter attempted 9.3 three-pointers per game and made 3.4, giving the Nets a high-volume perimeter scorer while the team finished 20-62, the third-worst record in the Eastern Conference.

Despite Porter’s individual production, Brooklyn’s rebuilding timeline creates uncertainty around his role. The Nets used the No. 6 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft to select Mikel Brown Jr., but the franchise is still searching for a long-term foundation after another losing season.

The Nets have also explored trade possibilities involving Porter, with Jake Fischer reporting that Brooklyn would listen if another team meets its asking price. Porter’s contract structure could make him attractive on the trade market because his 2026-27 salary is not fully guaranteed, allowing teams flexibility while acquiring an established scorer.

However, Brooklyn’s front office has not indicated that moving Porter is the preferred outcome. Marks’ comments suggest the Nets view him as a valuable veteran presence who can help support their younger players while remaining one of their most reliable offensive weapons.
