Karl-Anthony Towns delivered an emotional, wide-ranging postgame press conference after the Knicks clinched the championship, blending celebration, reflection, and gratitude. His remarks stretched from cultural pride to personal loss, with repeated emphasis on timing, belief, and family.
Towns opened by addressing the Dominican fan base directly, saying, “Hell yeah, I’m bringing the trophy over there… we’re taking it all over.” He listed locations across the country with pride: “Santiago, Santo Domingo, Casa de Campo, La Romana… we’re taking it everywhere,” adding, “we’re gonna have a little world tour with it.”
He credited Al Horford for inspiration, stating, “A huge shout out to Al Horford, who really inspired me to do this,” and emphasized the shared experience within the roster: “I got my two rooks up here… this is a lifetime work for me. 11 years, they got to see this in two years… one year for you, for real.”
Reflecting on his own journey, Towns said, “I thought in my first, second year, I would get one… but I needed 11 years to do it.” He added, “You never know how truly hard it is to get to NBA finals… for me, it took 11 years, a lot of ups and downs in my career to get to this point,” before concluding, “God is good. It’s all happening.”
Towns also framed the Knicks’ resilience through the lens of belief and collective effort, saying, “it just speaks volumes to this team, how versatile and the depth of our team.” He pointed to the defensive performance in the closeout game: “it was the defense that got it done today for me… I’m glad I was able to show the world on the biggest stage that I could get it done.”
He praised teammate Jalen Brunson, noting, “I see a man that’s grown up and took the challenge of being in the biggest market in the world… he could do it,” while also referencing the supporting core around him, including OG Anunoby and others, saying, “it’s been an honor to be brought to this team.”
Towns dedicated significant time to his father’s influence, explaining, “He’s been everything to me. He taught me the game of basketball,” and recalled early sacrifices: “I had a father who was willing to put those long hours in… I was very fortunate… I had a hardwood floor… to work on my game.” He added, “me and my dad was the one who got to this level and he believed in me.”
On the emotional weight of the moment, Towns said, “it builds you as a man,” reflecting on setbacks: “when people pushed me down, put me in the mud, told me I wasn’t good enough, I just kept believing.” He summarized his mindset simply: “I kept pushing… I kept walking down the path God had for me.”
He also acknowledged personal grief and presence of his late mother, saying, “I heard her presence is always felt in my life,” and added, “it’s just great to always feel her arms around me and always feel her love in my life in so many different ways.”
