Michael Jordan’s 55-point performance at Madison Square Garden remains one of the most referenced moments of his post-retirement return, and former guard Derek Harper recently revisited what it felt like to defend him that night.

Speaking on “Run It Back,” Michelle Beadle asked Harper about the mindset behind that iconic game, where Jordan re-established his dominance on one of basketball’s biggest stages.

Harper described how defensive matchups shifted early, with him initially guarding B. J. Armstrong and Steve Kerr before being switched onto Jordan.

That change immediately altered the tone of the game, according to Harper, who recalled Jordan’s direct message in the middle of the action.

“Harper, couple of things. You’re pretty good defensively. But it’s too late. I’m already hot. So don’t worry about it. You’re not going to stop me not today. Those were his words,” Harper recalled, via HoopsHype.

The quote captured the control Jordan had over tempo and momentum once he found rhythm, especially in high-pressure environments like Madison Square Garden.

Harper emphasized that while defenders could attempt to make things difficult, stopping elite scorers in that state was a different challenge entirely.

“There were times you couldn’t stop Mike. There were times where you couldn’t stop him. You can make it difficult,” Harper said, reflecting on the experience.

He added that facing a player in full rhythm required constant adjustment, even when defensive schemes were correctly executed.

“You got to show a lot of different looks in order to slow it down,” Harper explained, pointing to the tactical limits defenders faced.

Jordan’s 55-point outing in New York became one of the defining performances of his career, reinforcing how quickly momentum could shift when he dictated the game’s pace.

The game also highlighted a broader theme from that era: elite isolation scorers could neutralize defensive plans once they established confidence early.
