Lakers head coach JJ Redick highlighted Luka Doncic’s efficiency and all-around play after Los Angeles (1-1) defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves (1-1) 128-110 on Friday night.

“He managed the game really well. We needed him scoring early. They were making shots, we made some defensive mistakes, but Luka became a willing passer,” Redick said. He added that Doncic’s defense improved from midway through the first quarter, and “11 rebounds out of your point guard is just awesome.”

Redick also explained the team’s adjustments after last game’s third-quarter struggles. “There were no basketball adjustments. It was a halftime routine adjustment. Maybe that’s the blueprint,” he said. The change helped Los Angeles limit turnovers and create timely defensive stops.

The coach discussed Doncic narrowly missing a 50-point game. “I’ve given you three chances… just take the shot,” Redick said, describing their exchange after the Slovenian star missed a layup and a late free throw. “He was awesome,” he added.

Deandre Ayton also drew praise for his performance. “His patience for the game was really good. Luka got it going early, and DA’s screening helped. Defensively, he was really good as well,” Redick said.

Redick reflected on the Lakers’ preparation amid fan expectations. “I have great respect for fan bases that care… it didn’t affect me or the group at all in terms of our preparation,” he noted, acknowledging the attention following the season-opening loss.

Doncic scored 49 points with 11 rebounds and eight assists, becoming the fourth player in NBA history to begin a season with back-to-back 40-point games. He shot 14-of-23 from the field with five 3-pointers and made 16 of 19 free throws, despite minor injuries to his groin and left hand early in the game.

Anthony Edwards led Minnesota with 31 points, while Julius Randle had 26, but the Timberwolves could not match the Lakers’ firepower. Austin Reaves added 25 points, 11 assists, and seven rebounds, Rui Hachimura scored 23, and Ayton finished with 15 points.

Bronny James made his season debut for Los Angeles, playing the final 3:14 while LeBron James watched from the bench. The Timberwolves host Indiana on Sunday, and the Lakers travel to Sacramento the same night.
