Philadelphia already appears to have a clear plan for how LeBron James will be used next season.
According to NBA insider Shams Charania, the 76ers expect James to spend significant time at point guard, running Nick Nurse’s offense.
“The Sixers, I’m told, are expecting LeBron James to play a good amount of time and period of time at the point guard position, on offense, initiating the game, the offense, for Nick Nurse,” Charania said Monday on NBA Today.
Charania added that the move would free Tyrese Maxey to play more off the ball.
“Tyrese Maxey, last season, played a lot on the ball at point guard, and we know his prowess off the ball as a scorer. Think of a better player that can set the table for Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, VJ Edgecombe. There’s all these players that can score, that can get the ball from LeBron James.”
The role is familiar for James, who averaged a career-high 10.2 assists while leading the Lakers to the 2020 NBA title.
Philadelphia also lacked a true floor general last season, making the player a natural fit despite entering his age-41 campaign.
After signing a two-year, $8 million contract, James is expected to lead an offense featuring Embiid, Brown, Maxey and Edgecombe.
The talent is undeniable, but the challenge will be keeping so many stars involved offensively.
