The Philadelphia 76ers have added frontcourt depth and defensive versatility, agreeing to a four-year, $39 million contract with free agent forward Dean Wade. NBA insider Shams Charania reported Tuesday that several contending teams pursued the former Cleveland Cavaliers forward before he chose Philadelphia.
Wade, 29, arrives after spending his first seven NBA seasons with Cleveland, where he developed into one of the league’s dependable role players. While his offensive numbers have never been eye-catching, his combination of positional defense, floor spacing and low-mistake basketball made him a valuable piece for a Cavaliers team that reached the Eastern Conference playoffs in multiple seasons.
In 2025-26, Wade appeared in 59 games, making 38 starts while averaging 5.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 22.3 minutes per game. He shot 43.9% from the field and 36.2% from three-point range, continuing a career trend as a reliable perimeter shooter for a frontcourt player. Across 342 career games, Wade owns a 36.7% mark from beyond the arc and an effective field-goal percentage of 56.6%.
The signing addresses an area of need for a Philadelphia roster that leaned heavily on its stars last season. The 76ers finished 45-37, good for seventh in the Eastern Conference, before defeating the Boston Celtics in a seven-game first-round series. Their postseason ended abruptly, however, as the eventual champion New York Knicks swept Philadelphia in the conference semifinals.
Philadelphia’s offense was led by Tyrese Maxey, who averaged 28.3 points and 6.6 assists while earning All-NBA Third Team honors. Joel Embiid added 26.9 points and 7.7 rebounds despite being limited to 38 games, while Paul George contributed 17.3 points over 37 appearances. Rookie guard VJ Edgecombe also emerged as a major contributor, averaging 16.0 points in 75 starts and finishing third in Rookie of the Year voting.
The move also strengthens the 76ers’ forward rotation after Dominick Barlow started 59 games and averaged 7.7 points and 4.8 rebounds last season. Wade’s experience in playoff environments and ability to guard bigger wings could allow Philadelphia greater lineup flexibility against the Eastern Conference’s top contenders.
Philadelphia also added another young piece during last week’s NBA Draft by selecting Alabama guard Labaron Philon with the 22nd overall pick.
