The Washington Wizards and San Antonio Spurs have agreed to a trade sending big man Kelly Olynyk to the Spurs.

In exchange, the Wizards will get two young players, Malaki Branham and Blake Wesley, plus a second-round draft pick in 2026. This pick is one of the better second-round picks from Dallas, Philadelphia, or Oklahoma City.

Olynyk is 34 years old and played last season for the Raptors and Pelicans. He only played 44 games due to health issues but performed well when he was on the court, averaging 8.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists in about 20 minutes per game.

He’s known for being able to shoot from outside as a forward/center. Olynyk will join a Spurs team that features young star Victor Wembanyama and recently signed another center, Luke Kornet.

Interestingly, Olynyk was traded to Washington just two days ago as part of a three-team deal, but the Wizards never planned to keep him long-term.

His salary doesn’t have to be matched with another player’s in this trade, making it easier for the Wizards to trade him right away.

Branham and Wesley, both drafted in 2022, haven’t yet become regular players in the Spurs lineup, and their playing time has gone down each season.

Still, they are both only 22 and have potential: Branham is a good shooter, and Wesley is a strong defender.

It’s unclear if the Wizards will keep Branham and Wesley as part of their team or if they mainly wanted the draft pick and to save money on salaries.

Olynyk’s contract expires after the 2025/26 season and pays $13.45 million, while Branham and Wesley will earn less than $10 million combined in their final rookie contracts.

The Wizards now face a crowded roster, with 15 players under guaranteed contracts, not counting a few others who might stay.

The Spurs, on the other hand, will have just 12 players signed after the trade, giving them plenty of room to add more players without exceeding salary limits.
