The Washington Wizards have brought in former NBA guard Shabazz Napier as a coaching apprentice, league sources told HoopsHype. The addition marks a new step in Napier’s basketball journey as he transitions from player to mentor.
Napier, 34, last played professionally with Bayern Munich during the 2024–25 season, where he captured the Bundesliga title and earned Finals MVP honors. His move into coaching follows an accomplished international career that included stints with Olimpia Milano, Zenit Saint Petersburg, Crvena Zvezda, and Mexico City Capitanes.
Before his time overseas, Napier spent six years in the NBA with multiple teams. He was drafted in 2014 and appeared for the Miami Heat, Orlando Magic, Portland Trail Blazers, Brooklyn Nets, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Washington Wizards. His last NBA appearance came during the 2019–20 season with Washington.
The Connecticut native built a decorated résumé in college, leading the University of Connecticut to two NCAA championships in 2011 and 2014. He was named the 2014 Final Four Most Outstanding Player, a consensus first-team All-American, and the Bob Cousy Award winner as the nation’s top point guard.
Napier’s on-court experience across the NBA and Europe brings valuable perspective to a young Wizards roster anchored by Bilal Coulibaly, Alex Sarr, and Cam Whitmore. His background as a playmaker and leader could complement head coach Brian Keefe’s development-oriented approach.
Washington’s staff already features several former players, including assistant coach Alexis Ajinça. The organization continues to emphasize player development as it rebuilds around its emerging core and prospects like Bub Carrington and Tre Johnson.
