Gordon Elliott saddled three winners, highlighted by the success of the Jack Kennedy-ridden Kalypso’chance in the Grade 3 John Lynch Carpets & Flooring Monksfield Hurdle, at Navan on Sunday. Set off at odds of 3/1, the five-year-old put a disappointing first effort over hurdles at Down Royal behind him as he scored a comfortable one and a quarter-length win over Paul Nolan’s 6/1 shot The Big Clubman. Elliott was winning the race for the sixth time in seven years. The trainer’s day had started well as the Danny Gilligan-partnered 13/8 favourite Barbizon scored a taking win in the opening three-year-old maiden hurdle. Like Kalypso’chance, he sported the Gigginstown House Stud colours and was well on top in beating Noel Meade’s 6/1 chance Ben Hur by four and a quarter lengths with 2/1 chance Wackestone, trained by Elliott and ridden by Jack Kennedy, two and a quarter lengths away in third place. The Francis Mangan-owned Oldschool Outlaw completed Elliott’s treble with a six and a half-length success in the concluding bumper. Ridden by Harry Swan, the 2/1 favourite led over two furlongs out and was soon clear to beat Stuart Crawford’s 28/1 chance Royal Hillsborough. The Declans Bar Syndicate-owned St Denis’s Well won the Gaeil Colmcille GAA Kells ‘Day At The Races’ Handicap Hurdle for the second time in three years. Trained by Ian Donoghue and ridden by James Smith, the well-supported 3/1 joint-favourite made all the running and went clear from the final hurdle to score by four and a quarter lengths from Gavin Cromwell’s Cowper Hall, the other 3/1 joint-favourite. St Denis’s Well was second in the same race last year.
