Transfer news LIVE: Arsenal target Yildiz, Liverpool in Minteh bid, Spurs agree £85m Savinho deal

With the new Premier League season on the very immediate horizon, Adam Clery explores Arsenal’s chances of retaining their title for the first time since the 1930s

Arsenal are exploring a move for Juventus forward Kenan Yildiz as Mikel Arteta seeks to complete his transfer plans for an assault on both the Champions League and Premier League for the new season. The Gunners are agreed to sign Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa, but the left side of attack has long been identified as a priority position and the 21-year-old Turkey international is high up on their list of targets.

Liverpool have had a £50m offer for Yankuba Minteh rebuffed by Brighton, as they step up their search for a successor to Mohamed Salah, and have agreed a deal with Inter Milan to sell Curtis Jones. Liverpool are also interested in Bradley Barcola, but there has been a substantial difference in their valuation of the France international and Paris Saint-Germain’s, with the Champions League winners looking for £145m.

Manchester United are ready to splash more than £60m on Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, ending a pursuit that begun last summer and bringing in further reinforcements to their midfield, while Tottenham have agreed a deal to sign winger Savinho from Manchester City for an initial £75m. Spurs also want to sign Omar Marmoush, while City have identified Brazilian winger Allan as a possible replacement.

Fabian Hurzeler confirms Man Utd target Carlos Baleba will not play this weekend

Manchester United have made a £60m bid for Carlos Baleba and the Brighton midfielder will not be involved in their opening game of the season against Aston Villa on Sunday, Fabian Hurzeler has confirmed.

“Carlos Baleba is a Brighton player. I’ll never comment on rumours which are in the media, I can’t control – a lot of things are written,” said Hurzeler when asked about the future of his midfielder.

The German said that the only reason he will not be involved against Aston Villa is because “he’s not fit”.

“I know about the situation but I have a very important game with my staff and team in two games. That’s my only focus at the moment,” added Hurzeler.

Could Tottenham’s summer spending reach £400m?

Savinho will become one of the three most expensive players in Tottenham’s history, with all recruited by Roberto De Zerbi this summer after Mateus Fernandes’ £85m move from West Ham and Sandro Tonali’s £100m transfer from Newcastle.

They have also paid Brighton £52m for defender Jan Paul van Hecke and brought in free transfers Martin Dubravka, Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi, with the possibility a deal for Omar Marmoush, who cost City £59m in January 2025, could push their expenditure up towards £400m.

The Premier League lacks star power. Does that actually matter?

For all of the Premier League’s wealth and cultural dominance, most football’s biggest stars still play for Barcelona, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich. What does that mean and will it ever change, asks Miguel Delaney in his latest Inside Football newsletter

Arsenal set to complete Ezri Konsa deal

Arsenal are set to complete the signing of Ezri Konsa – and it could be done in time for the England defender to make his debut against his old club Aston Villa.

David Ornstein of The Athletic reports that Konsa has signed a four-year contract with Arsenal after the clubs agreed a £51m deal with £4m in add-ons.

The defender, who covers both centre-back and right back positions, was Arsenal’s top defensive target this summer following the injury to William Saliba.

Arsenal are yet to confirm Konsa’s move but this one seems done and dusted.

Man City told by Crystal Palace that Adam Wharton is not for sale

Manchester City have been told by Crystal Palace that England midfielder Adam Wharton is not for sale this summer, The Athletic reports. The 22-year-old could have been seen as option to continue City’s midfield rebuild should they miss out on Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace are set to reject an approach from Galatasaray for winger Ismaila Sarr. New boss Pierre Sage confirmed at yesterday’s press conference that the Senegal international is not for sale.

Premier League 2026/27 predictions: Champions, top four, signing of the season and more

The Premier League is back after a busy summer following the World Cup and excitement is building with a sense of great opportunity at both ends of the table.

Arsenal will begin their title defence and hope to capitalise on immense change and uncertainty spreading around the league.

After Pep Guardiola’s seismic departure, the debut managerial campaigns for Enzo Maresca, Andoni Iraola, Xabi Alonso, Matthias Jaissle, Pierre Sage, Oliver Glasner, Marco Rose and Alvaro Arbeloa bring intrigue.

While the promoted clubs, Coventry City, Ipswich and Hull, face a daunting task to survive, though one they will relish.

With an absence of superstars, perhaps beyond Erling Haaland and Bruno Fernandes, new, younger talent could rise up to become the household names this league creates.

Here is what our writers are expecting and looking forward to:
