A recent report from French outlet “Le Progres” suggested that ASVEL’s consideration of leaving the EuroLeague for the Basketball Champions League – and potentially aligning with the NBA Europe project – is being framed as a strategic decision by the club.
However, there is another major factor in play. According to Eurohoops sources, ASVEL is already at risk of being removed from the EuroLeague due to financial non-compliance tied to its A License obligations.
Under the league’s updated Financial Fair Play requirements, clubs holding an A License must spend at least €5.85 million on player salaries, which represents 30% of the average revenue calculated among A License members.
Based on official figures released by the French LNB, ASVEL’s player salary budget sits at €4.55 million – notably below the EuroLeague minimum.
This shortfall could trigger sanctions from the EuroLeague and gives the organization the authority to expel the club or allow shareholders to deny an extension of its license. The situation has already been addressed in the latest EuroLeague board discussions.
With ASVEL’s A License set to expire this summer and no renewal agreement signed, the club appears to be approaching what could be a forced exit from the competition, regardless of whether its shift toward the BCL and future NBA Europe plans is voluntary or not.
At the same time, Tony Parker has openly stated his ambition to become a head coach in the NBA, which has fueled speculation that he may be preparing to sell the club or relinquish majority control.
EuroLeague can expel ASVEL for not meeting competition standards.
The matter had already been discussed before the intention of ASVEL leaving the league was made public during the weekendhttps://t.co/y4st2HX4dw
