Spurs honor Gregg Popovich with subtle tribute

Throughout his legendary career, he consistently deflected praise and preferred that recognition go to his players rather than himself.

So when the Spurs decided to honor the man who built their dynasty, they did it in a way that perfectly reflected his understated personality – quietly and without ceremony.

Inside the Frost Bank Center, next to the banners of Spurs legends like Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker, now hangs a simple but powerful tribute: a banner that reads “Pop 1,390.”

The inscription commemorates Popovich’s all-time NBA record of 1,390 regular-season wins, the most by any head coach in league history.

At the top of the banner sit five stars – a subtle nod to the five NBA championships San Antonio captured under Popovich’s leadership (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014).

There was no press conference, no public unveiling, and no elaborate ceremony – just a quiet addition to the rafters, in keeping with the coach’s humble nature.

It was a gesture that encapsulated Popovich’s legacy: excellence without ego, success built on teamwork, and a lasting impact that speaks for itself.
