Lost in the shuffle of Grigor Dimitrov’s heartbreaking retirement against Jannik Sinner on Monday at Wimbledon, was the fact that the Italian may have picked up an injury of his own.
After a scary fall in the first game of the match, Sinner needed the attention of on-court physio to have his right elbow checked.
He later talked about the injury in his post-match press conference, and said that he was still in pain on his serve and forehand.
“It happened very early in the match, first game,” he said. “Was a quite unfortunate fall. Checked the videos a little bit, and it didn’t seem [like a] tough one, but I still felt it quite a lot, especially serve and forehand. I could feel it. So let’s see. Tomorrow we are going to check to see how it is, and then we see.”

Sinner underwent an MRI on Tuesday to have the injury checked.
“As I said, tomorrow we are going to check with MRI to see if there’s something serious, and then we try to adjust it,” he said on Monday.
Exacerbating the injury is the fact that Sinner parted ways with his fitness coach and his physiotherapist, in the week before Wimbledon.
In another twist, reportedly Sinner has cancelled his practice for Tuesday, but that could be due to numerous reasons.
Lots of buzz at #Wimbledon about Jannik Sinner canceling the practice he’d scheduled for Aorangi in this hour.
Always possible, though, that he’s just opting to hit somewhere else with fewer cameras and observers staked out.

No word yet on the test results – the Italian will face Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at Wimbledon.
