Shaquille O’Neal has always been confident in his place among basketball’s all-time greats, frequently describing himself as one of the most dominant centers in NBA history.
Yet even the Lakers legend was quick to give credit to a current superstar he believes has surpassed him in certain ways.
“We’re different players, but I’ll probably have to say Giannis,” O’Neal admitted when asked to compare himself to Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo at their respective peaks.
“The game has evolved from when I played. That’s what you want. You want evolution in the game.”
O’Neal’s praise comes as Antetokounmpo continues to post staggering numbers early in the season, drawing parallels to the type of dominance Shaq displayed during his prime.
Through his first three games, Antetokounmpo has averaged 36.3 points and 14.0 rebounds, leading the Bucks with his trademark power and relentless energy.
In a standout performance against the New York Knicks on Tuesday night, Giannis once again showcased his all-around brilliance, tallying 37 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, a steal, and two blocks.
