Seth Curry explains long-awaited Warriors move

At a press conference after Thursday’s practice, Seth Curry spoke about his decision to finally join the Golden State Warriors, a move he had resisted for most of his career despite the obvious family connection.

As reported by Sam Gordon of The San Francisco Chronicle, Curry explained that for years he felt the need to establish his own identity in the NBA rather than play in the shadow of his older brother, Stephen Curry, the face of the franchise.

“I was trying to create my own path,” Seth said, reflecting on why he had avoided Golden State until now. To him, teaming up with Steph too early would have meant constant comparisons and a tougher road toward proving himself as a player.

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr agreed with Seth’s reasoning, saying that timing played a big role in why this partnership is happening only now.

“I don’t know if the timing was right (for Seth to join us) over recent years,” Kerr admitted. “We probably didn’t have playing time for him. He was in a place where he was going to teams and playing a lot, making money. It just feels like (Stephen and Seth are) both at a point in their careers where this makes a ton of sense. I’m thrilled to have Seth.”

While Steph became a legend in the Bay Area, transforming the Warriors into perennial contenders, Seth had to take a different, more winding path.

Undrafted out of college, he climbed his way up through the G League before carving out a niche as one of the league’s most reliable shooters. Over the past 11 seasons, he has suited up for nine different NBA teams.

Despite the constant movement, he built a reputation as an elite marksman, and Gordon points out that his 43.3% career average from three-point range is actually a touch higher than Steph’s – an impressive stat considering his brother is widely considered the greatest long-distance shooter of all time.

For now, Seth’s contract with Golden State is a non-guaranteed Exhibit 9 deal, meaning he’s likely to be waived before the regular season begins. The expectation is that he will return on a pro-rated veteran’s minimum contract once the Warriors sort out their cap situation.

“Everybody’s excited about it,” Seth said of his long-awaited pairing with Steph. “Instead of watching more games, it should be just easier to watch my game, which is easier on everybody. Everybody is excited about it, except maybe my dad (Dell Curry). He didn’t want me to leave Charlotte.”

For Seth, the move represents more than just joining his brother – it’s a chance to bring his experience and shooting touch to a team built around family-like chemistry, while finally sharing an NBA court with Steph as teammates instead of rivals.
