Newmarket tips
- Hoseki (Newmarket, 12.25) – 2pts win @ 5/2 (Betfair)
- Blue Bolt (Newmarket, 13.35) – 3pts win @ 9/20 (BetMGM)
- Topteam (Newmarket, 14.10) – 1pt each-way @ 12/1 (Paddy Power)
- Starlight Lass (Newmarket, 15.50) – 1pt win @ 2/1 (Betfair)
There’s a jam-packed weekend of top-class racing to look forward to from across the globe, but the pick of the UK action comes from Newmarket, the base for my Saturday racing tips with four to follow on that card.
British EBF Premier Fillies’ Handicap (12.25, Newmarket)
An interesting fillies’ handicap to kick things off, with some of these already exposed but possessing ability and others with untapped potential.
Handicap newcomers Light Of Paris and Black Chiffon clearly come under the latter banner, and of those two, I’d prefer to be with the latter on betting sites, though both will need a fair bit of improvement for the switch to this route if they’re to beat HOSEKI.
William Haggas saddles the Simon Munir and Isaac Souede-owned three-year-old, who has built on her juvenile form by winning four of her five starts this calendar year. In so doing, she’s proved herself on sound, fast and slow ground, so she won’t mind what the conditions are here.
She’s won over 1m4f but she had no problem dropping back to 1m2f at Haydock last time, when she won with more in hand than the official margin suggested. Saffie Osborne partners the daughter of Saxon Warrior and after going up just 3lb for that latest win a month ago, I think she remains well treated and is my idea of the winner.
Supplicate and Pendella are both respected but I don’t think there’s as much scope there for them to better the selection.
Newmarket tip 1: Hoseki – 2pts win @ 5/2 (Betfair)
Betmgm Sun Chariot Stakes (Group 1) (13.35, Newmarket)
It doesn’t matter which way we look at the big race of the day, BLUE BOLT is the best filly in the field and should be capable of taking her unbeaten four-year-old record to six wins in succession.
I’ve looked for some each-way value and, if City Of Memphis goes off at around 11/2 or greater on horse racing betting sites, then she’d represent the sort of ‘each way bet to nothing’ that I wouldn’t discourage.
At bigger prices, if you want to take a pot shot then 1,000 Guineas second Evolutionist does look a big price at around 25/1 and I was tempted to take her each-way but we have just the two places to play with and her insistence of taking a keen grip continues to scupper her chances. If we could guarantee she’d settle then that would very much be a sporting bet.
However, the facts are that Blue Bolt is at least 7lb clear of this field, she acts on a sound or fast surface and she had more than 2L on City Of Memphis in the Group 1 Matron Stakes at Leopardstown last time. It will be a shock if she gets turned over. As you know, I tend not to go for shorties but I do make some exceptions and she looks worth it.
Newmarket tip 2: Blue Bolt – 3pts win @ 9/20 (BetMGM)
HKJC World Pool Handicap (14.10, Newmarket)
From the sublime to the, well hopefully not ridiculous but the fact that he’s now just 1lb higher than when scoring at Kempton (1m4f, AW) in April suggest that TOPTEAM may be capable of a return to form in this 1m4f handicap.
Andrew Balding’s team has been pretty consistent all season but that’s not a positive that can really be linked to this particular member of his team. Having scored when fresh in that Kempton contest, he has been an in and out performer ever since.
He arrives on the back of two below par AW efforts but his CV shows that his season’s best performance was over this C&D (good) when a 1L runner-up behind Adgard’s Captain in May.
It’s possible to pick holes in the form of all of his opponents, one way or another and, at the prices, I think he’s a small stakes each-way play on betting apps in the hope that he can raise the bar sufficiently to make the first three, in a race where there are eight runners.
Newmarket tip 3: Topteam – 1pt each-way @ 12/1 (Paddy Power)
Newmarket Fillies’ Handicap (15.50, Newmarket)
I think it’s worth giving another chance here to STARLIGHT LASS, who was well beaten as favourite at York on her handicap debut last time, when John Gosden suggested afterwards that soft ground had not suited her and that she’d prefer a faster surface.
She gets that here, as well as the 7f trip that suits her free-going style and I could see a scenario where she may not see another rival from when the gates go back. Based on the best of her three qualifying runs she’s well treated here and I’d be surprised if there isn’t more to come.
Newmarket tip 4: Starlight Lass – 1pt win @ 2/1 (Betfair)
Responsible gambling
It is important to practice safer gambling online, and regulated bookmakers can help bettors stay in control of their betting through their detailed safer gambling hubs.
As you’ll find on all UKGC licensed gambling sites, there is a range of tools available such as deposit limits, profit and loss calculators, reality checks and self-exclusion options.
If you need to seek help for a gambling problem, there are various charities that can help if you ever feel your gambling has got out of hand:
