Russell Westbrook focused solely on NBA return, not overseas offers

Veteran guard Russell Westbrook is not considering playing overseas this season, according to NBA insider Marc Stein. He reported on The Stein Line that there has been “zero discussion” regarding Westbrook entertaining international opportunities.

Despite the likelihood that he would attract a range of lucrative overseas offers, Westbrook’s camp remains focused on securing another NBA role. Stein noted that this focus could mean his next team may not materialize until after the 2025–26 regular season begins on October 21.

The Sacramento Kings have emerged as a potential landing spot for Westbrook, with sources citing “strong mutual interest.” The franchise is seeking to strengthen its bench, having ranked 29th in both points and assists from its second unit last season.

Westbrook’s history with the Kings organization could play a significant role in discussions. He previously played alongside Domantas Sabonis and Dennis Schroder, and he shares Los Angeles ties with DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine, two key Sacramento players.

Professional respect for the front office also factors into potential talks. Westbrook knows new general manager Scott Perry and assistant GM BJ Armstrong from their time in agency roles. New head coach Doug Christie reportedly admires Westbrook’s leadership and competitive edge.

The 35-year-old guard declined his $3.4 million player option in June and underwent right-hand ligament surgery in late May. He has since recovered and remains available for teams seeking veteran playmaking and leadership.

During the 2024–25 season with the Denver Nuggets, Westbrook averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds in 68 games. While his role was reduced, his intensity and ability to facilitate offense continue to attract NBA front-office attention.

Even offers from China reportedly worth nearly four times what the Kings can provide have not swayed Westbrook. His priority is remaining in the NBA, though a short-term overseas stint could remain a contingency to stay active and financially flexible before a potential midseason return.

Westbrook’s career spans 1,237 regular-season games across six NBA teams, averaging 22.5 points, 7.1 assists, and 6.7 rebounds. His focus remains clear: the NBA, where he continues to seek a meaningful role for the 2025–26 season.
