Portland Trail Blazers center Robert Williams has been sent to the team’s G League affiliate, the Rip City Remix, for conditioning purposes as he continues his recovery from a knee injury, according to the team’s PR announcement.
The move is designed to help the big man regain his rhythm and fitness before rejoining the main roster.
Injuries have plagued Williams since his arrival in Portland two years ago, limiting him to just 26 total appearances. The 28-year-old big man underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in March, which sidelined him for much of the year.
As he works his way back to full strength, the player is expected to re-enter the Blazers’ rotation soon, where his defensive presence and rebounding could make a significant impact.
With his contract set to expire after the season, Williams will become an unrestricted free agent in the summer and may also draw trade interest ahead of this year’s deadline, given his upside when healthy.
Williams has played 7 seasons for the Celtics and Trail Blazers. He has averaged 7.2 points and 6.9 rebounds in 234 regular-season games.
