Robert Lewandowski joins Chicago Fire in huge Major League Soccer deal

Robert Lewandowski, the prolific striker, has completed a significant transfer from Barcelona to Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire, with the club announcing his signing on Monday. The deal is set to run through the 2027-28 MLS season, marking a major acquisition for the American league.

The Polish international, renowned for his exceptional goal-scoring prowess, netted 120 times during his four-year tenure at Barcelona. He will occupy a coveted Designated Player slot and an international roster spot for the Fire, pending the necessary P-1 visa and International Transfer Certificate. This high-profile move signals a clear intent from the Chicago club.

Chicago Fire head coach Gregg Berhalter expressed considerable enthusiasm for securing one of Europe’s most celebrated forwards. “From the day (club owner) Joe Mansueto and I met for the first time, we set out to build a world-class Club that inspires greatness, unites Chicago and wins championships,” Berhalter stated.

“Robert embodies those values and represents the standards this city deserves: a champion and a competitor,” he added. “His arrival reinforces our ambition to compete for trophies and raises the standards for the club to heights worthy of this city. We cannot wait to get to work with him and have Chicago see first-hand why he is among the most revered sporting icons in the world.”

This signing represents a considerable coup for Chicago Fire, bringing in a 37-year-old who boasts an astonishing 567 goals across all competitions for Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Borussia Dortmund combined.

His illustrious trophy cabinet contains 30 accolades from these clubs, alongside an impressive international record as Poland captain, with 167 appearances and 89 goals for his country.

Chicago currently sit third in the Eastern Conference standings, with 26 points from 14 games, seven points adrift of leaders Nashville, hoping Lewandowski’s arrival will propel them further up the table.
