Rich Paul, LeBron James’ longtime agent, expressed optimism about the 41-year-old star’s future during a recent episode of Game Over with Max Kellerman and Rich Paul.

Paul said, “I hope it’s not his last year. I’m going to talk to him about it,” emphasizing that he has not directly discussed retirement with James.

Paul highlighted LeBron’s ability to adapt as a floor general alongside Luka Doncic, comparing him to Karl Malone’s role with John Stockton. He noted, “If LeBron sets the screen, you pretty much have to switch it. You’re on one of the greatest decision makers who ever lived.”

The agent addressed concerns about roster balance, particularly regarding Austin Reaves. He said that while Reaves is a willing defender, his lack of defensive prowess could challenge the Lakers’ top three players, who need strong defensive support. Paul added, “There’s no doubt Austin Reaves has to be paid… a lot.”

Paul also praised LeBron’s longevity and basketball IQ, suggesting James could extend his career by embracing a more strategic role.

The discussion touched on James’ recent comments about bending to Luka’s leadership on the court. Paul called it “an astute, self-aware, admirable comment,” highlighting LeBron’s willingness to mentor younger players while maintaining high production.

James is currently averaging 21.7 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 6.8 assists per game this season over 18 games. He has logged 33.3 minutes per game while maintaining 51.2% shooting from the field.

With the Lakers sitting fifth in the Western Conference at 23-12, Paul emphasized the importance of LeBron creating moments for the team’s young core. “Spend these years creating moments and memories for young players in your locker room… give them everything you have because you don’t know how much longer you’re going to be in those locker rooms,” he said.

LeBron’s ability to impact the game while mentoring emerging talent underscores his unique value to the Lakers. Paul’s remarks suggest the 21-time All-Star may not yet be ready to retire, leaving open the possibility of continued dominance in the 2026-27 season.
