The Toronto Raptors brought in Chris Paul at the trade deadline as part of the deal involving Ochai Agbaji, but the veteran guard is not expected to play for the team.
General manager Bobby Webster said Thursday that Paul will be waived “at the appropriate time.”
Unless a new team is already lined up for him after he clears waivers, there appears to be little rush for Toronto to finalize that move until a roster spot is needed.
As Blake Murphy of Sportsnet.ca noted, the Raptors can afford to wait until they require their 15th roster spot.
Michael Grange of Sportsnet.ca added that the final opening on the roster could eventually be filled by two-way player Alijah Martin.
Chris Paul has played 21 seasons for 7 teams, including the Clippers and Hornets. He has averaged 16.8 points, 9.2 assists and 4.4 rebounds in 1,370 regular-season games.
He was selected to play in 12 All-Star games, and has won the Rookie of the Year award.
