While Toronto largely held firm at the trade deadline, the team did manage to add some frontcourt depth by acquiring Trayce Jackson-Davis from Golden State in exchange for a second-round pick.

According to general manager Bobby Webster, the Raptors had been tracking Jackson-Davis for quite some time and were simply waiting for the right circumstances to make a move.

“We’ve always had our eye on him in the past, but timing matters too,” the Raptors’ general manager said, per Michael Grange of Sportsnet.ca.

“We called on him before, but Golden State got another big (Kristaps Porzingis) and I think it was sort of time for him to be free. So, when we did the Ochai (Agbaji) deal (to get below the tax), we had the ability. We didn’t have a lot of money to spend, but we looked at anyone under $3MM that we could bring in and he quickly rose to the top of the list.”

Getting below the tax opened the door, allowing Toronto to land long-time target Jackson-Davis at a low cost when Golden State’s situation finally aligned.

Jackson-Davis has played 3 seasons for the Warriors. He has averaged 6.6 points and 4.6 rebounds in 166 regular-season games.
