The Dallas Mavericks are heading into the 2025 offseason with a mix of hope and urgency.
After winning the NBA Draft Lottery, the team is expected to select highly touted prospect Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick, providing an immediate injection of talent to the roster.
But despite this major boost, the Mavericks face a pressing issue: a lack of healthy, experienced point guard play.
This problem emerged rapidly after the team made a blockbuster trade that sent longtime franchise cornerstone Luka Doncic elsewhere.
Soon after, their remaining All-Star guard, Kyrie Irving, suffered a torn ACL, leaving the Mavericks unexpectedly thin at the point guard position.
Irving is not expected to return to action until at least January, creating a clear need for a short-term – and potentially long-term – solution at the lead guard spot.
NBA insider Shams Charania weighed in on the Mavericks’ situation, confirming the team’s intentions to be active in the market for a floor general.
“I’m told the Mavericks will be pursuing a point guard,” Charania said. “Whether that’s in the trade market, or in free agency. That’s a big priority for them. Kyrie Irving is targeting sometime in January to make his return. We’ll see which point guard they can have as a plug and play for them.”
To address this void, the Mavericks could leverage their depth in the frontcourt.
With the recent acquisition of Anthony Davis and the expected addition of Cooper Flagg, the frontcourt rotation has become crowded, potentially making players like Daniel Gafford and PJ Washington available in trade talks.
Both are valuable contributors who could draw interest from other teams in need of size or defensive presence.
The point guard search looms large while the franchise is building around Flagg and Davis.
Whether Dallas turns to a veteran free agent or targets a trade partner willing to absorb one of their surplus big men, filling that gap will be essential if the team hopes to stay competitive during Irving’s absence and beyond.
