Magic Johnson has labeled Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham as a “superstar in the making” after Cunningham’s incredible performance in the Pistons’ 100-94 victory over the New York Knicks. The game, which took place on Monday, saw Cunningham score 33 points and grab 12 rebounds, leading Detroit to a crucial win in the first round of the playoffs.

The Pistons, who had not won a postseason game since 2008, were buoyed by Cunningham’s all-around performance. His 33 points were complemented by his leadership on the court, helping to balance the Pistons’ attack.

Johnson, the Lakers legend, praised Cunningham on X, calling his performance a statement to the league. “Pistons guard Cade Cunningham showed America he’s a superstar in the making,” Johnson tweeted.

Dennis Schroder also played a pivotal role, adding 20 points off the bench, including a game-deciding three-pointer with just 55 seconds remaining. The Pistons, after a rough Game 1, executed perfectly in the final stretch to secure the victory and even the series 1-1.

Cunningham’s performance came after a difficult Game 1, where he struggled to find his rhythm. This time, he was efficient, shooting 11-of-21 from the field and controlling the game. His offensive and defensive efforts helped the Pistons extend their lead in the final quarter, despite the Knicks mounting a strong comeback.

The game featured standout contributions from other Pistons players as well. Tobias Harris added 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Jalen Duren posted a double-double with 12 points and 13 boards, despite dealing with foul trouble. Detroit’s defense and ability to draw fouls played a key role in the win, as they shot 34 free throws, compared to the Knicks’ 19.

The Knicks, led by Jalen Brunson’s 37 points, were unable to muster enough support from their starting lineup. Karl-Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby, who had been dominant in Game 1, were limited to just 10 points each. New York’s shooting struggles also hurt their chances, as they finished with just 42% from the field and 28.6% from three-point range.

With the series now tied at 1-1, all eyes are on Game 3, which will take place on Thursday at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena. Fans are hopeful that their team’s momentum will carry them toward a series lead as they aim to end a long playoff drought.

Cunningham’s stellar performance has also put him in the spotlight for the 2024-25 Most Improved Player (MIP) award. He is one of three finalists, alongside Dyson Daniels and Ivica Zubac. Cunningham’s leap from 22.7 points per game last season to a career-high 26.1 points this year has earned him widespread recognition as one of the league’s emerging stars.
