CLG Lios Póil officially launched its preparations to host Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta 2027 at a special community event held in Tigh Tabhairne Ui Shúilleabháin, Garraí na dTor, Lios Póil, on Saturday, 19 September 2027.
The launch brought together club members, former and current players, supporters and members of the wider community to mark the beginning of an exciting journey for Lios Póil and the West Kerry Gaeltacht.
Guests were welcomed by Gabriel Ó Cathasaigh, Cathaoirleach, Choiste Chomórtas Peile na Gaeltachta 2027 who spoke about the significance of hosting the Comórtas and the important role played by the club within the local community.
A specially produced short film was premiered during the event, telling the story of Lios Póil through the voices of the people who have represented, supported and shaped the club over the years. Featuring current and former players and members of the local community, the film celebrated the club’s identity, history and strong connection to the Irish language.
The event also featured a panel discussion with Caoimhín Ó Grífín, Ciarán Ó Súilleabháin, Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh, Alanna Ní Chonchúir, Gearóid Ó Súilleabháin, Niamh Ní Chonchúir, Tomás Ó hAiniféin agus Gabriel Ó Cathasaigh. The conversation explored the importance of the Comórtas, the relationship between Gaelic games and the people and the Irish language, Lios Póil’s preparations to welcome clubs and supporters, and the legacy the competition can create for the next generation.
Speaking at the launch, Gabriel Ó Cathasaigh said: Hosting Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta is an incredible honour for Lios Póil which instils great pride and excitement in every house. It’s a big undertaking and there’s wonderful credit due to the meitheal of people, families and businesses who have come together to showcase the absolute best of our parish. It’s a celebration of our community, heritage, culture and language.
Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta will take place in Lios Póil from Friday, 4th June to Monday 7th of June 2027. The competition will welcome clubs, players and supporters from Gaeltacht communities throughout Ireland for a weekend celebrating Gaelic football, music and dance and of course the Irish language.
Preparations are being led by the club with the support of volunteers, community organisations, local businesses and sponsors. Further details about the competition, upcoming fundraising activities and opportunities to become involved will be announced over the coming months.
Gabriel Ó Cathasaigh thanked CLG Lios Póil and everyone who attended the launch, those who contributed to the film and panel discussion, and the many volunteers working behind the scenes to prepare for the Comórtas.
