Los Angeles Lakers star forward LeBron James has officially decided to exercise his $52.6 million player option for the 2025–26 NBA season, committing to what will be his eighth year with the Lakers.

This move ensures James will remain under contract for at least one more season as he continues to pursue another championship in the later stages of his legendary career.

Historically, James has taken a different approach to his contracts. In past offseasons, the four-time NBA champion typically opted out of his deals and then re-signed on short-term contracts, often for two years with a player option on the second season.

That strategy has given him maximum flexibility to reassess his priorities and the team’s competitiveness every year.

His agent, Rich Paul, spoke to ESPN about the reasoning behind the decision and James’ mindset entering what could be one of his final NBA seasons.

“LeBron wants to compete for a championship,” Paul said. “He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we’ve had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.”

“We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what’s best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what’s best for him.”

James’ new deal continues to include a no-trade clause, giving him full control over his future with the franchise. While his decision to opt in locks him in for another season, his long-term plans beyond 2025–26 remain uncertain.

James remains focused on winning, even late in his career. By opting in, he shows faith in the Lakers’ ability to stay competitive while rebuilding.
