LeBron James praised Luka Doncic’s dominance after the Los Angeles Lakers overcame a halftime deficit to defeat the Utah Jazz 140-126 at Crypto.com Arena on Tuesday.
“Yeah, when you have an MVP caliber player, candidate like Luka… it’s only so many defenders out there,” James said, highlighting how Doncic’s playmaking creates opportunities for the team.
James, returning in the first game of his 23rd NBA season after missing the first 14 contests due to sciatica, recorded 11 points and 12 assists while playing 30 minutes. He noted the challenge of regaining rhythm after such a long layoff. “Rhythm is still coming back obviously… everything that happened tonight was as expected,” he said.
The Lakers surged in the third quarter with a 21-5 run, fueled by Doncic’s 17 points in the period and contributions from Austin Reaves, who scored 26 points. James emphasized the fun of being on the court with his teammates. “It’s just fun to be out there with the guys… physically, emotionally, spiritually and everything just tested me,” he said.
James also discussed his early chemistry with new teammates, including Jake LaRavia and Deandre Ayton. “I can fit in with anybody… I was just putting myself in position while watching the games of how I can help the team,” he said.
Defensively, James highlighted the importance of team discipline and rebound control. “Our biggest test is how we defend each night… not let teams off the hook offensively,” he said, noting that Utah’s Keyonte George and Lauri Markkanen scored 33 and 31 points, respectively.
The Lakers combined for 17 assists from James and Doncic, shot 60 percent in the second half, and outrebounded Utah 41-35. LeBron also acknowledged the growth of Bronny James, who played 3:33 and made a three-pointer in his father’s return.
Reflecting on his own game, James stressed patience and focus. “My biggest challenge this season… just staying in the moment… there’s not many more games for me,” he said, noting the significance of his longevity in the NBA.
With the Lakers now 11-4, James sees the team’s depth and balanced attack as key moving forward. “Everybody enjoys being around each other, playing for one another, sacrificing for one another… my rhythm will come with more games and more flow,” he said.
Los Angeles returns to Utah for a rematch on Sunday, aiming to extend their three-game winning streak while continuing to integrate James and Doncic’s combined offensive firepower.
