Rookie guard Kon Knueppel reached another milestone in his breakout season on Thursday, setting the Hornets’ single-season franchise record for three-pointers, according to Steve Reed of The Associated Press.
Knueppel made four threes in a win over Phoenix, giving him a league-best 261 and surpassing Kemba Walker’s previous record of 260 from the 2018/19 season.
“I think maybe I’ve surpassed my expectations for myself a little bit,” the player said.
After being selected No. 4 overall, Knueppel entered the season unsure of his role, especially after what he felt was an underwhelming offseason. But he quickly secured a starting spot and has held onto it throughout the year.
He also credited the home crowd for providing extra motivation as he chased the record.
“You definitely feel it,” he said. “It makes the ones that go in real, real sweet, but it is also like pretty reassuring as a shooter when the ones you miss the crowd (lets out) an audible like ‘ooooh.’ That’s reassuring as a shooter that fans believe in that every shot you take is going in.”
