Indiana Pacers rookie Kam Jones was arrested in Indianapolis following what police described as a “brief” pursuit on Interstate 65.
According to court documents obtained by TMZ Sports, Jones told officers “he did not know he was speeding and was running late for practice for the Indiana Pacers.”
The documents also note that the player “did not know” the officer had initially been trying to pull him over.
Police reports state that officers attempted to stop a car driving recklessly around 10 a.m., but the driver – later identified as Jones – failed to immediately comply.
The pursuit lasted roughly four miles, during which Jones allegedly weaved through traffic before eventually stopping.
The 23-year-old was taken into custody and booked into the Marion County Adult Processing Center. He now faces charges of felony resisting arrest and misdemeanor reckless driving.
If convicted on the felony count, Jones could face up to two and a half years in prison, along with a substantial fine.
The Pacers acknowledged the incident in a brief statement to Fox 59, saying, “We are aware of the situation involving Kam Jones. We are in the process of gathering additional information and will not have any additional comment on the matter at this time.”
