Brooklyn Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez addressed his team’s inability to sustain energy during Monday’s 113-100 defeat to the New York Knicks at Barclays Center.
“We started with the right intentions…we couldn’t sustain it all the way through,” Fernandez said, pointing to mental mistakes in transition as a key factor.
Fernandez noted that spacing and execution hindered offensive efficiency. “A lot of those shots were off-target…if we are a little bit cleaner…those 14 could easily be 17, 18,” he said, highlighting the missed opportunities despite early competitiveness.
Karl-Anthony Towns’ dominance was a central challenge for Brooklyn. “He’s a very good player…we got to find ways to fight him better,” Fernandez admitted, as Towns scored 37 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, controlling the paint throughout the game.
Noah Clowney provided a bright spot, scoring a career-high 31 points. Fernandez praised his rapid development, saying, “You start to see the growth…sustain it and prove it…give the team a chance to win games.” Clowney shot 13-of-13 from the free throw line and made six 3-pointers, showing offensive versatility.
Fernandez also commented on Drake Powell’s progress, noting his confidence and aggressiveness. “He looked free out there, having fun, playing really hard…he’s going to continue to understand the league,” Fernandez said, emphasizing the importance of gradual development in both offensive and defensive roles.
The coach stressed that defending Towns is a team responsibility. “It’s not just on Nick to guard KAT…we have to be better as a group,” Fernandez said, urging collective effort to contest elite offensive big men.
Fernandez made a strategic bench adjustment, leaving Ziaire Williams out of the rotation. “I wanted to challenge him with his defense…gave the chance to J-Wil who has always been ready,” he explained, focusing on defensive accountability and readiness for future games.
Brooklyn struggled to match New York’s efficiency, shooting 38% overall and failing to capitalize on key possessions. Michael Porter Jr. added 16 points, but the Nets remain winless at home (0-8) this season, while the Knicks improved to 10-6, extending their streak against Brooklyn to 12 consecutive wins.
Brooklyn will face Philadelphia on Friday, while the Knicks travel to Charlotte on Wednesday, with both teams looking to build momentum in a demanding schedule.
