Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid will miss Wednesday’s game against the New York Knicks, his second straight absence due to right knee soreness, the team announced (via Kyle Neubeck of PHLY Sports).
The Sixers said Embiid will be reevaluated after All-Star weekend, allowing him a week of rest in hopes of returning at full strength, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line.
Both Neubeck and Tony Jones of The Athletic characterized the move as precautionary.
“It’s bothering him enough that he’s not playing,” coach Nick Nurse said. “I think it is improving a little bit, it’s just not quite there to get out there tonight.”
Despite concerns entering the season, Embiid has produced strong numbers, averaging 26.6 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 31 games for the 30-23 Sixers.
With Embiid out Monday against the Portland Trail Blazers, Andre Drummond started and posted 11 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two blocks, while Adem Bona handled the backup minutes and is expected to start Wednesday.
