England cricket great James Anderson will not be given a new contract with Lancashire County Cricket Club leaving the future of his playing career in major doubt.

Anderson was reportedly informed of Lancashire’s decision not to award him a new contract for 2027 after a meeting with incoming director of cricket Paul Farbrace and new chief executive Richard Kenyon on Monday. After a tumultuous time on and off the field, Lancashire are planning a new direction for the club.

Last season, Anderson took 50 wickets at an average of 17 and was one of only seven bowlers in the County Championship’s Division Two to take 50 wickets or more in the campaign.

The 44-year-old’s future is now in doubt with the Daily Mail reporting that he will choose to retire from the game rather than looking to continue on at a different county.

Anderson remains England’s highest ever wicket taker after claiming a record 704 wickets in Test cricket before being forced into international retirement in 2024. He continued to play Lancashire, his home county and the one he has represented for 25 years, and was named captain for the 2026 season.

Amidst ongoing turmoil at the club off the field, Anderson oversaw Lancashire’s worst finish in the County Championship since 1984 as the club finished second to bottom in the Division Two table with only two wins recorded. Lancashire are now in the process of a hard reset with Farbrace and Kenyon replacing former director of cricket Mark Chilton and former chief executive Daniel Gidney who both left the club at the end of the season.

Anderson made his debut for Lancashire in May 2002. Over the next 20 years he became the most skilled swing and seam bowler in the world and claimed 1,193 first-class wickets at an average of 24 as well as 358 wickets in one-day cricket and 71 in T20s.

Regarding the decision to move him on once again, Anderson’s age plus the uncertainty over his fitness should he pick up an injury will have played a role in the decision from Farbrace and Kenyon not to renew his contract. There is no question over his continued ability as last summer showed he was one of the outstanding competitors with the ball in county cricket.

Anderson has previously dabbled in franchise cricket having played in two matches of The Hundred for the Manchester Originals in 2025 but it seems unlikey that he will go down this route again to further his playing career having previously revealed that he “hated every minute” of those two games.

Another option would be to move to a different county for the 2027 season but only time will tell if that is a route he will take or if cricket has already seen the final act of the legendary James Anderson.
