Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd addressed the team’s 123-114 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday at American Airlines Center. The Mavericks battled despite losing P.J. Washington Jr. early to a left shoulder strain.

“Not to say that it was a big thing. I thought the group played hard, but to lose him five minutes into the game… that put us down a guy who’s playing well for us,” Kidd said. He credited the team’s effort, noting they continued competing even when trailing.

Kidd highlighted Klay Thompson’s performance off the bench, saying, “Klay was really good for us tonight. We made some threes. We made 17 of them tonight. But our defense got us back into the game.” He praised Brandon Williams for executing the game plan and attacking the paint.

Brandon Williams also drew praise for his adjustment to the starting role. “He’s trying to keep everyone involved. We all know his strength is scoring and he did that for us tonight,” Kidd said. He added that Williams’ comfort level is improving as he gains experience against top defenders.

The Mavericks faced challenges from Phoenix’s hot shooting, particularly Devin Booker and Grayson Allen, who combined for 49 points. Kidd stressed the importance of minimizing turnovers in tight games. “We can’t, when we’re behind, turn the ball over. We got to get shots,” he said.

Despite the loss, Kidd was encouraged by the team’s fourth-quarter rally, cutting an 18-point deficit to three. “We start to see the ball go in the basket and we got stops. When we can get two or three stops in a row and counter that on the offensive end, it gives us a chance,” he explained.

Kidd also touched on Daniel Gafford’s status, noting he performed well despite his minute restrictions, and praised the effort of Moussa Cisse. “He brings energy to the team, spreads quickly in the game, competes at a high level, and doesn’t stop,” Kidd said.

Looking ahead, Kidd emphasized growth and resilience. He pointed to Cooper Flagg’s engagement with fans and their work ethic as key elements for the team’s long-term development. “Cooper understands his role. He takes time to sign autographs and spend time with fans. That’s what the best understand,” Kidd said.

The Mavericks (3-9) will aim to rebound when they host the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday, while Phoenix (7-5) continues its four-game winning streak against the Indiana Pacers next Thursday.
