Jared Butler’s heart condition – hypertrophic cardiomyopathy – is well known, and up to this point, it hasn’t prevented him from pursuing a professional basketball career.
However, reports from Serbian outlet Nova.rs indicate that Butler failed his initial medical examinations after signing with Crvena Zvezda, raising new concerns about his playing status.
As a result, Butler will reportedly be unavailable for the team’s upcoming EuroLeague matchup against LDLC ASVEL.
The Belgrade-based club is expected to seek further medical opinions to reassess the 24-year-old guard’s condition before determining his eligibility to play.
Butler’s health has been a subject of attention since 2021, when the NBA temporarily barred him from participating in team activities due to the same diagnosis.
In June of that year, he was referred to the league’s fitness-to-play panel and was initially ruled ineligible to play or practice.
However, after undergoing further evaluation, he was medically cleared a month later and went on to appear in 148 NBA games with multiple teams.
Despite the recent reports, Crvena Zvezda has not issued an official statement regarding Butler’s status or his absence from the upcoming EuroLeague fixture.
For now, his future with the Serbian powerhouse remains uncertain as the club awaits additional medical feedback.
