Confirming Jake Fischer’s recent reporting for The Stein Line, Michael Grange writes that Raptors assistant coach Jama Mahlalela has advanced to the final stage of the New York Liberty’s head coaching search.

According to Grange’s sources, the hiring process has been underway “for a while,” and all interviews were completed as of this past weekend.

With the Liberty narrowing in on a decision, Mahlalela is firmly in contention to take over the WNBA franchise.

If he is ultimately selected, the move would leave the Raptors with a significant vacancy on their coaching staff, as Mahlalela has held various roles with the organization for years.

Grange also points out that his departure would create complications for Team Canada.

Mahlalela was previously announced as an assistant coach for the Canadian national team through the 2028 Olympics, and taking on a WNBA head coaching role could lead to scheduling conflicts or require adjustments to Canada’s staff structure.
