The New York Knicks’ interest in Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd could stall before it ever gains traction.
Despite reports linking Kidd to the Knicks’ head coaching vacancy, ESPN’s Tim MacMahon noted that Dallas is hesitant to even entertain the idea. “The Mavericks obviously do not have to grant permission,” MacMahon said on The Hoop Collective podcast, via HoopsHype. “There is at least some internal discussion about ‘why would we do that?’”
The Knicks parted ways with Tom Thibodeau after a 51–31 season that ended in the Eastern Conference Finals.
With Kidd and Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka both under contract, any potential discussions require organizational consent.
The Mavericks ended the regular season 39–43 and secured the final Play-In spot in the West. Despite missing the playoffs, they won the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery and reportedly view Kidd as a stabilizing figure.
Kidd, who remains under contract, is expected to receive a restructured extension, per MacMahon. “One very feasible scenario here is Jason Kidd ends up with a restructured extended extension,” he added.
The Knicks’ opening has drawn attention across the league following back-to-back 50-win seasons and their deepest postseason run in over two decades. Thibodeau’s dismissal marked the end of a five-year tenure that included four playoff appearances.
