The future of Kevin Durant with the Phoenix Suns remains uncertain, but there’s a possibility he could stay with the team for the 2025-26 season, according to NBA insider Chris Haynes.

In a recent episode of Haynes Briefs, Haynes shared his thoughts on Durant’s future with the Suns, indicating that the team’s search for a new head coach could play a significant role in the decision.

“It is very likely that Kevin Durant will be moved this summer. However, if the Suns can find a coach that fits their identity, a coach that’s respected by players around the league, there is a possibility Durant remains with the Suns,” Haynes explained.

Durant, 36, has been a key figure for the Suns since joining the team in 2023, but the 2024-25 season ended in disappointment. Phoenix failed to make the playoffs, finishing 11th in the Western Conference with a 36-46 record. This lack of postseason success led to the dismissal of head coach Mike Budenholzer after just one season.

NBA insider Shams Charania reported last week that the Suns are looking to rebuild around Devin Booker, who remains a cornerstone of the franchise. Booker, 28, posted impressive numbers this season, averaging 25.6 points, 7.1 assists, and 4.1 rebounds. However, Durant’s future is still up in the air, and the Suns could look to trade him if the right opportunity arises.

The Suns’ management is working to find a coach who can lead the team back to contention. This coach will need to implement a “grind-it-out” culture and communicate effectively with the players, with a particular focus on maximizing Booker’s prime years. If the Suns are able to secure the right coaching hire, Durant could still remain in Phoenix, a team that has struggled defensively this season but has a high payroll and aspirations for a championship window.

The Suns are expected to explore trade options for Durant, and his business partner Rich Kleiman could play a role in facilitating the process. A trade could see Durant land with a contender looking for that final piece to make a title run. However, if the Suns make the right moves on the coaching front, Durant could choose to stay and help guide the team into the 2025-26 season.
