‘Impact was horrendous’ – Michail Antonio’s return date target revealed by Jamaica boss Steve McClaren after car crash

STEVE MCCLAREN has revealed Michail Antonio’s proposed return to action following his horror car crash.

The West Ham forward, 34, required surgery on a broken leg after being cut from the wreck of his Ferrari in December.

There were fears Antonio would never play again after the terrifying crash.

He was airlifted to hospital after spinning off the road in the £260,000 supercar in Essex.

West Ham boss Graham Potter recently revealed the Hammers star is back in light training.

But he refused to open up on when Antonio may be fit to return.

The 34-year-old’s international boss Steve McClaren has now confirmed Antonio is eyeing a comeback.

McClaren said: “Michail has come from non-league and fought his way through to play in the Premier League, in top games in Europe and for Jamaica, making an impact wherever he goes,’

“The impact [of the crash] was horrendous.

“He is confident he will come back and is aiming for the summer period.

“Or hopefully our World Cup qualifying group in September, October and November.

“He is a true character off the field, always bubbly and great for the squad. We miss that.

“He says the one thing he has got is motivation. When warriors have motivation, they tend to achieve their goal.

“His goal is to be back in the summer to help Jamaica.”

Antonio made his long-awaited return to the London Stadium on Monday.

The 34-year-old appeared pitchside ahead of West Ham’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle.

Antonio is West Ham’s record scorer in the Premier League.

He has also earned 21 caps for Jamaica since 2021, scoring 5 times.

A grateful Antonio thanked emergency services for saving his life after he was discharged from hospital on New Year’s Eve.

He wrote on Instagram: “Every year around this time, I’m asked what I’m grateful for, and every year I’ve struggled to find the right words.

“But this year, I know exactly what I’m grateful for: being alive.

“I’ve spent so many years taking life for granted. I made plans for the next day, the next year, always assuming tomorrow was guaranteed.

“What I’ve been through recently has opened my eyes. Life is fragile, and every single moment matters.

“I’m so grateful to God for giving me the strength to keep going and for allowing me to still be here.”
