The Charlotte Hornets are in the market for a veteran point guard to bolster their depth behind LaMelo Ball, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer.

In a report published on Marc Stein’s Substack, Fischer noted that the Hornets have joined teams like the Clippers, Mavericks, and Kings in searching for experienced ball handlers this offseason.

Ball, 23, remains the franchise cornerstone, but injuries have limited his availability in recent years. He appeared in just 47 games during the 2024–25 season before undergoing ankle and wrist procedures in March.

Despite averaging 25.2 points and 7.4 assists last season, Ball’s durability concerns have increased the urgency for Charlotte to secure a stable option behind him.

Vasilije Micic, Seth Curry, and Nick Smith Jr. are the only other healthy backcourt options currently under contract. However, none profile as traditional playmakers or long-term solutions at the lead guard spot.

Tre Mann remains on the roster but is recovering from injury, and Damion Baugh holds a two-way contract, limiting his availability for consistent rotation minutes.

Charlotte’s front office is expected to target experienced ball handlers who can manage the offense, reduce the workload on Ball, and contribute to player development during the team’s rebuild.

The Hornets finished 14th in the Eastern Conference with a 19–63 record.

Ball is entering the second year of a five-year, $203.8 million extension signed in July 2023. While the organization is not actively shopping him, they have not ruled out listening to trade offers if a significant proposal emerges.

Still, the team remains focused on surrounding Ball with the right pieces rather than initiating a full teardown.
